Moon Valley La Paz, Bolivia
Valle de la Luna

At about 6 miles (10 Km) from central La Paz, Bolivia, in the southernmost suburb of the Zona Sur is Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon).

Moon Valley in La Paz is a great attraction for a half-day excursion to see in the city. Moon Valley is like stepping onto another planet, with its desert-like landscape, it is an oddly eroded hillside maze of canyons and pinnacles that have been sculpted by wind and rain.

Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) contains narrow trails that you can hike on and explore the different formations in the area. There are also several species of cactus that grow there.

The area is typically warmer compared to the city and the air is drier because of the desert-like landscape. Bring plenty of water and good shoes or boots if you plan on walking the trails.

Getting There

Valley of the Moon can be reached by taking micro bus #11 or minibus #231 or #271 to Mallasa. These buses can be caught at Plaza del Estudiante in La Paz.

Get off near the soccer field and the golf course, and the entrance of the park is a few minute walk away. You can also tell the driver where you are going and he will point you in the right direction. A taxi can also be taken here for about 70Bs ($10)

You can also visit Valle de la Luna as part of an organized city tour, where Moon Valley is a quick stop. You'll most likely get a 15 minute photo stop here, not much time to walk around and explore though. But, it is a good option if you just want to see the area quick.

To enter the main park area, where most bus tours stop off, there's a 15Bs entrance fee to walk around. Many guides will offer to take you around park, they can be ignored and you can do it on your own unless you want a lecture on the geography of the area.
