"Interesting Trivia on Cochabamba, Bolivia"

  • In the classic hit movie Scarface, starring Al Pacino, a scene in the movie is based in Cochabamba, although it was actually filmed in California.

  • In 2000, what is known as the "Cochabamba water revolt", the people of Cochabamba fought against privatization of the water supply by a US owned company. The people protested against this and won.

  • Bolivia's richest person and one of the world's richest person in the early 1900's, Simon Patino was born into a poor family just outside Cochabamba. He was nicknamed "The Andean Rockefeller" and owned numerous mines in Bolivia.

  • Famed California teacher and professor Jaime Escalante, upon whom the American movie Stand and Deliver was based on, retired to Cochabamba with his wife in 2001 and teaches occasionally at the local university.

  • Bolivia's only female President, Lydia Gueiler Tejada was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
