Lake Chiarkota

Lake Chiarkota is a lake near La Paz, Bolivia. The lake typically serves as a base camp for mountain climbers that climb the three nearby peaks known as Condoriri.

Condoriri are beautiful and popular mountain peaks for mountaineers that is just north of La Paz, Bolivia. It consist of three peaks and is named Condoriri because the group of mountain peaks resemble a condor with its wings and head in the middle (hence the name). The main summit is the "head" of the condor.

If you don't want to climb the peaks of Condoriri, you can also just hike to Lake Chiarkota as a day trip from La Paz. For hikers and backpackers Lake Chiarkota is a lovely natural lake where you can stay to enjoy the beautiful scenery, a route which takes you to Zongo area and possible links with other treks.

There is no good way of getting there by using public transportation, however a tour agency in La Paz can easily organize transportation and a guide.

Alternatively you could rent a 4X4 vehicle and drive the vehicle from La Paz to the small village of Tuni and then from the village you hike up the trail that leads to Lake Chiarkota.

There are some signs that show the way along the trail. It takes around 3-4 hours to hike up to the lake that offer many beautiful views and another 2-3 to get back down. You can also hire a local guide in the city to take you there.
